Monitor Calibration
Monitor Brightness and Contrast are seldom set correctly, and many web page graphics created on a misadjusted monitor won't show up well on other peoples' screens. This is especially true for web graphics created on MACs, where monitor brightness is set to replicate the printing industry paper-white background. Changing the settings can be accomplished by twiddling with internal and external controls on older monitors, with on-screen controls of modern monitors, or with the display utilities of the Operating System.
Gamma Setup (more details below)
![]()
You should see at least 11 shades of gray above with a properly setup monitor.
To adjust your monitor to the correct gamma - adjust your monitor contrast to get separation between the black and dark grey on the left (you should see separation between the two last dark tones on the left). Then adjust the white by creating a separation between the light grey and white on the right (you should see separation between the two light tones on the right). Lastly, look for any color cast in the white and grey tones - they should be neutral in color. Monitors tend to have a magenta cast to them until they have warmed-up for 30 minutes.
